A pretty great place...

Kamas, Utah is a small community found in Summit County, Utah relying on cattle ranching and tourism for its economy. Kamas is located about eighteen miles east of Park City and about forty-six miles southeast of Salt Lake City in a valley surrounded by the Uinta Mountains to the east, the Wasatch Mountains to the west, the Provo River on the south, and the Weber River to the north. Beaver Creek, a tributary of the Weber, traverses the center of the valley. To many, Kamas is known as "The Gateway to the Uintas".


Access to the surrounding mountains is easy from Kamas, Utah. Due to the proximity of the forested lands, logging was an early industry. That industry has now been replaced by tourism. In addition to tourism, the surrounding fertile land is excellent for raising cattle.

The headquarters of the Wasatch National Forest is located in Kamas. The town has become a supply station of sorts for the many visitors who come to the area to enjoy hiking and camping in the nearby Uinta Mountains and the region known as Granddaddy Lake. Visitors to the surrounding mountains travel to Kamas for supplies and information. Another popular attraction, which occurs annually, is July 24 Rodeo. Come to Kamas, Utah and join the locals in their enjoyment of fishing, hiking, camping, mountain climbing and various other outdoor recreational activities.

According to the United States Census Bureau of 2000, Kamas has a population of over 1,200 people. The city has a total area of 1.6В square miles with a population density of over 800 people per square mile. It is located at very high altitudes of over 6,400 feet above sea level.

Kamas is the starting point for the annual High Uintas Classic, a two-day bicycle race that takes place every summer, usually in mid-June. The race features a mountain stage that takes participants on the Mirror Lake Highway from downtown Kamas over Bald Mountain Pass and into Evanston, Wyoming.

Kamas also hosts Fiesta Days, a community celebration on and around July 4 and the 24, the Pioneer Day holiday in Utah. Fiesta Days includes rodeos, a demolition derby, a parade and the Miss Fiesta Days beauty/scholarship pageant.
